Immigration and Nationality Act

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) was enacted in 1952. The INA collected many provisions and reorganized the structure of immigration law. The INA has been amended many times over the years and contains many of the most important provisions of immigration law.

The INA is contained in the United States Code (U.S.C.). The U.S. Code is a collection of all the laws of the United States. Title 8 of the U.S. Code covers "Aliens and Nationality."

The tables below show INA sections and their corresponding U.S. Code section. To ensure accuracy, USCIS links to the official U.S. Code prepared by the Office of the Law Revision Counsel of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Emerald Isle Immigration Center (EIIC) has a long history of helping new immigrants into their new communities while learning about the culture and history of the United States. Created in 1988, the center originally guided many Irish immigrants on how to establish roots in this country, including how to open bank accounts, obtain driver’s licenses, access insurance, and apply for visas and Green Cards. Through USCIS’ Citizenship and Assimilation Grant Program, EIIC continues to teach lawful permanent residents about what it means to live and thrive in the United States today and the importance of understanding the country’s history.

What to do?
While Your Green Card Application is Pending with USCIS

If you already submitted a Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, and your case is pending with USCIS, here is some useful information to know.

Check Case Status

Use this tool to track the status of an immigration application, petition, or request.

The receipt number is a unique 13-character identifier that consists of three letters and 10 numbers. Omit dashes ("-") when entering a receipt number. However, you can include all other characters, including asterisks ("*"), if they are listed on your notice as part of the receipt number. When a receipt number is entered, the "Check Status" button will be enabled and you can check the status.
